ARTIST STATEMENT:

Walking along the beaches of Cape Cod, the wind picks up and the waves start to grow larger and larger as they crash on the rocks. Heavy clouds move in and the sky and water darken to deep blue and grey. I paint to capture that exciting energy- the air mixing with wind and water.
I work partially to perfect technique then destroy it to bring forth the energy and bring my paintings to life. I use oil paint because of the elasticity of the medium which allows me to rearrange forms like the natural energy in storms. I had a kidney transplant  and haveused painting as a healing medium.  I get lost in my painting and have used them to forget about medications, problems and emotional issues. I had decided that painting would be an important part of my life again after painting only occassionally while raising my children.  In my work " Conte ntment" I give thanks to my daughter for my new kidney and my sons for all of their love and encouragement.  I have put a kidney shape at the center of the figure to represent the changes in my life and the importance of my kidney to live and the love I have to be content.   I still find inspiration on walks by the ocean and the "gifts from the sea" that I find.  I used a piece of driftwood in one of my abstract works and have made a large piece of wood into
a sculpture inspired by zen rock sculptures.  I have also tried to expand my work using the things around me. I used prescription bottles,
packing paper and mix them with paint on canvas for some of my other works. I find inspiration around me and incorporate it into my work.
